The term “Iyengar Yoga” is shorthand for classical yoga taught by the methods developed by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar of Pune, India. Guruji Iyengar studied and practised yoga for nearly 80 years and taught in all five continents, earning worldwide respect and recognition for his achievements and making yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere. Iyengar Yoga is the world’s most practised yoga method.
IYENGAR® teaching certficates are internationally recognised and are a benchmark of excellence. IYENGAR® teachers must be fully trained, qualified and certificated by Iyengar’s Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India and also bear this Certification Mark:
The Iyengar method is systematic and thorough. It is carefully structured so you make safe and steady progress. The method is very precise with great attention given to correct practice. You start with asanas (postures), including savasana (relaxation) and gradually more difficult asanas are introduced as your depth of understanding increases. After some time, in accordance with the Yoga Sutras, pranayama (breathing technique) is introduced.
BKS Iyengar’s eldest daughter Geeta, son Prashant and grand-daughter Abhijata teach at the RIMIYI and Kirsten and Richard attend classes with them there annually.
